Valentine抯 Day wedding to promote pet adoptions

Friday, January 30th, 2009

What to do with more than four dozen cats and kittens in need of adoption? Hold a cat wedding, of course, just in time for Valentine抯 Day.

The Humane Society of Baltimore County, at 1601 Nicodemus Road in Reisterstown, has about 50 cats and kittens ready and waiting for adoption, as well as dogs and other pets.

As a way to promote pet adoptions and encourage shelter donations, the society is holding a cat wedding on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. A reception is to follow.

揗ore cats are surrendered to us than dogs each day,?spokeswoman Loury Davis said. 揟he Humane Society of Baltimore County is currently preparing for an increase in surrenders of cats and kittens during the upcoming warmer months.?br>
Although there are reports of an increase in people surrendering pets because they can抰 afford to keep them in the current economy, Davis said the shelter is seeing many for behavior and medical reasons.

揌owever, it would not be unreasonable to say that the state of the economy is having an effect,?she added. 揙wners may not be able to afford veterinary care or training for their animals at this time and choose to relinquish the pet.?br>
The bride, Comfrey, is six months old with shiny black fur and golden eyes. She was surrendered as a kitten last July.

Winslow, the groom, with striking gray, brown and black stripes, has been at the shelter since December.

They will be wed by non-denominational minister Roy List.

The nuptials are part of a 2-for-1 cat adoption promotion. In other words, people adopting one member of the wedding party will receive 50 percent off the standard fee.

In addition, the Golden Girls, a pair of 8-year-old shepherd mixes, are also available through the 2-for-1 promotion.

揥e held our first wedding in 2008 as a way to encourage people to come to the shelter to adopt cats that had been at the facility for a long time,?Davis said. 揟he Humane Society wanted to do an event that was different and fun - something that had not been done in this area previously and that would allow guests the opportunity to bring donations.?br>
The event is free, although donations are encouraged.

Bridal registry items to aid the shelter include gift cards, stainless steel bowls, dog and cat toys, unscented clay cat litter, cat blankets, beds and mats, paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent and white office paper.

Guests at the event will have a chance to win a dinner for two.

The adoption promotion runs during February. The shelter has also partnered with Flowers & Fancies, a florist, with a portion of purchases benefitting the shelter.

揥e really want to encourage everyone, including children, to come out and see the wedding,?Davis said.

Naomi Watts Not Rushing Into ‘Fairy-Tale Wedding’

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Naomi Watts doesn’t need a piece of paper to make her love for Liev Schreiber official.

“We’re very much together,” the actress, 40, tells Parade magazine. “We just don’t have that certificate, and that’s OK with both of us.”

The couple, who welcomed their second son, Samuel Kai, in December and have an 18-month-old son, Alexander Pete, may one day “just wake up and go, ‘Hey, let’s do this,” Watts says, “And maybe not. He and I have a family.”

Though Schreiber, 41, gave her “a beautiful ring,” Watts – who described her longtime partner as “a complicated man, which I’ve always been drawn towards” and “fiercely intelligent” – says they’re not rushing into anything just yet.

“It’s not like I’ve grown up having this dream of a fairy-tale wedding,” she says. “My mother married twice and had two divorces. And Liev comes from the same kind of background.”

While she doesn’t divulge more details about their relationship, Watts opens up about her ex-boyfriend, Heath Ledger, whom she met in 2002 while making the film Ned Kelly, by noting that his eyes “would tell a thousand stories in one glance.”

“It’s still incredibly difficult,” she says about Ledger’s death from an accidental drug overdose in January 2008.

“There was a wonderful mixture of power and fragility at work in everything he did, which just pulls you in, she adds. “His strength didn’t scare you. It intrigued you. And his fragility touched you.”
